Barclays has started to pay out to customers after suffering from a major system failure. Customers who are entitled to receive compensation will notice a distinctive entry in their mobile app transaction list, labelled "Barclays UK Refu" alongside the amount paid out.
Some may be surprised when they find extra money in their accounts since notification letters may lag behind the actual payments. On X, previously known as Twitter, customers shared unexpected windfalls with comments like: "Did anyone else randomly receive 50 pounds from Barclays?"
Others said: "Barclays just refunded me £600? I don't know what's going on down there but I will be taking that money." One person asked: "Does anyone have any idea why Barclays would send me a payment for £50?"
It follows earlier frustrations aired over social media during the outage, with one disgruntled customer saying: "Due to you Barclays I'm left without money had a food shop due for delivery this morning which now will get cancelled, leave my four kids with no food it's a joke as my money."
Another said: "Well I've just had to put all my shopping back in Tesco never been so embarrassed in my life ... as can't access my own money."
The BBC reported on Ruth, 39, a self-employed cleaner who spoke of being forced to use her savings to provide for her children because of the outage, reports Birmingham Live.
"We need the money to do shopping, our money is all in savings," she explained. "I've got my granddaughter here who's 11 months old, also a one-year-old, two-year-old, 12-year-old, 13-year-old, 15-year-old all at home.
"There could be many single mums in the same situation with no access to money."
The banking giant said: "I'm really sorry for the inconvenience caused. We're having some problems with our systems today and you may have trouble using some features in our app, online banking as well as payments in and out of your accounts."
A spokesperson for Barclays commented: "We're incredibly sorry for the ongoing technical issues that are impacting our customers' accounts. Some may see an outdated balance, and payments made or received may not show.
"We're working hard to fix this issue, and customers should not try to make the payment again. Customers can use their cards and withdraw cash, and as soon as these remaining issues are resolved, we'll let our customers know."
Barclays reassured customers that it would compensate any affected individuals so that they were not "left out of pocket".
